(98) Eleiotis DC. (1825) [Angiosp.: Legum.] Eleotis Ver.-Lib. & R.D. Stone (2020) Melastomat.] The genus was first established by the Swiss botanist Augustin Pyramus de Candolle (Prodr. 2: 348. Nov 1825) with monophylla (l.c.) (the epithet taken from illegitimate Glycine monophyllos Burm. f., Fl. Ind.: 161. 1768, non L. 1767) and E. sororia (L.) (≡ Hedysarium sororium L., Mant. Pl. Alt.: 270. 1771). Later, Wight Arnott described a new species, rottleri Arn. Ind. Orient. 1: 231. 1834), Cooke added another trifoliolata (Fl. Bombay 342. 1902). (Mém. Légum.: 338 [“348”]. stated “je lui ai donné le nom d'Eleiotis, pour rappeler celui d'Oreille Loir” (I gave it name of Eleiotis, to recall that dormouse's ear). Greek word for dormouse is ἐλειός (eleios), ωτίς (otis) means little ear, resulting generic alluding shape leaves (Patil, Origin Names: 104. 2007). Currently, considered comprise just two species (Mabberley's Plant-Book, ed. 4: 325. 2017), (= DC.) (incl. trifoliolata).
